More About Swedish Massage
Swedish massage was actually formally known as Swedish gymnastics when it was formed and popularized by Per (Peter) Henry Ling in the early 1800s. It first started when Ling was trying to find a solution to his own troubles with chronic pain. He then began techniques on himself that included kneading, steady strokes, and different types of active and passive movement. Once he noticed that this helped with his discomfort, he started spreading the word about its healing properties. Slowly the use of his techniques spread from Sweden to all over the world. When it came to the United States, the term "Swedish Massage" was adapted. Like many other medical practices, techniques were changed, adapted, and added to create what is well known today.
